What is Play Therapy?
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate therapeutic approach designed for children ages 3–12. Through play, trained mental health professionals help children express emotions, process difficult experiences, build coping skills, and develop healthier ways of relating to others.
Because children are still developing emotionally and verbally, they often cannot fully express complex feelings or experiences through words alone. Instead, children naturally communicate through play—one of their most comfortable and effective forms of expression.
In play therapy sessions, children are welcomed into a safe, supportive environment thoughtfully designed with therapeutic toys, games, art materials, and activities that encourage emotional growth and healing.
Through the therapeutic relationship and guided play, children are able to process emotions, gain insight, and build new skills in a way that feels natural and accessible to them.
Who Play Therapy Can Help?
Play therapy can help children who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, social, or developmental challenges, such as:
-
Play therapy offers children a safe, supportive space to explore fears, make sense of anxious thoughts, and develop confidence in handling worries and challenges.
-
When children experience difficult or overwhelming events, it can be hard for them to put their feelings into words. Play therapy offers a safe, supportive space for children to express and process trauma, loss, and big emotions in a way that fits their developmental needs.
-
Children can develop healthier ways to express their emotions, strengthen self-regulation skills, build meaningful relationships, and grow in empathy and social interactions with peers and family.
-
Big life changes—like divorce, moving, school challenges, medical concerns, or family stress—can feel especially overwhelming for children. Play therapy provides a supportive space for children to process these experiences and work through their emotions.
